Intumescent coatings can be applied before steel erection where the project scope, selected system, programme and handling arrangements make this approach suitable. Workshop application is coordinated with transport, erection, connections, damage inspection and site touch-up.

Planned Application in Workshop Conditions

Pre-install work allows the application sequence and required ambient and substrate conditions to be managed before delivery to site. The selected system is applied in planned coats, with WFT readings used to guide wet coat build across the accessible member surfaces included in the scope.

Its suitability depends on fabrication status, primer and system compatibility, handling, transport, erection sequence, connection details, weather exposure and the plan for post-install inspection and repair.

Surface Preparation

Preparation Based on Steel and System Requirements

Preparation is agreed from the steel condition, existing primer or coating, contamination and selected system documentation. Depending on the accepted specification, this may involve cleaning and degreasing, mechanical preparation or abrasive blast-cleaning.

Unknown or potentially incompatible coatings, corrosion and fabrication damage are raised before application so that the required treatment can be agreed with the relevant project parties.

Application and Workshop Conditions

Controlled Application Before Steel Erection

Pre-install application is completed in planned coats, with required ambient and substrate conditions checked against the selected product documentation. WFT readings guide coat build during application, while DFT is assessed after sufficient drying or curing.

Coating Application
Airless Application and Film-Build Control
Where suitable for the selected product, airless spray is used to apply planned coats across the accessible faces and edges included in the agreed scope. Connections and areas requiring completion after erection are identified within the project information.

WFT readings guide application, with DFT measured after sufficient drying or curing against the accepted member-specific schedule.

Application-Condition Records
Conditions Checked Against Manufacturer Limits
Ambient temperature, substrate temperature, relative humidity and dew point are checked at the intervals defined by the selected system documentation and agreed project QA plan.

The readings sit alongside relevant product, batch and coating-thickness information within the agreed application and handover records.
Handling, Transport and Erection
Coated members require agreed handling and protection measures. We coordinate our application scope with fabricators, hauliers, erection teams and the principal contractor so lifting points, transport, storage, connections, damage reporting and repair responsibilities are understood before dispatch.

Post-Install Inspection and Repair

Inspection and Repair After Erection

Transport, lifting, bolting, welding, access equipment and follow-on trades can damage or interrupt a pre-applied system. Accessible affected areas are identified through the agreed inspection process, then prepared and repaired using the selected system’s documented repair procedure.

Visual and DFT checks are completed as required after repair and sufficient drying or curing.

Repair Records

Post-Install Repairs Measured and Documented

Agreed repairs are recorded with their location, preparation, product and batch information, application conditions and thickness checks as required. These records help the project team review the completed application scope against the accepted system and member schedule.
Programme Coordination

Coordinated with Fabrication, Delivery and Erection

Pre-install application and site repair work are planned around confirmed fabrication releases, coating and curing times, transport, delivery and erection sequences. Programme dates remain dependent on steel availability, access, site conditions and the activities of other project parties.
